After decades of building a career you might be surprised to find you also accumulated a surprising amount of household clutter related to that career. After years on the clock, your home should be a space for relaxation and retirement dreams, not an overflow storage closet for the career you just left behind.
To reclaim your space and clear your mind, here are six things from your working life you should part ways with before you officially clock out.
The Work Wardrobe

Unless you plan on wearing power suits to the grocery store or scrubs to dinner, your closet is likely holding onto a mountain of “work-only” real estate.
Clear out the blazers, power suits, and ties right now, while they are fresh and in style. If you wait ten years to clear them out, fashion trends will have moved on and nobody will want them. Donating them immediately allows your pieces to find a second life helping someone else build their career.
Absolutly, keep a couple high-quality, versatile outfits for weddings, funerals or upscale dinners then take the rest straight to a local charity or organization like Dress for Success.
The Corporate “Swag” Stash
Go ahead and hand back those branded water bottles and company polos right along with your resignation letter! You don’t need a closet or cabinet full of logos from a company you no longer work for. They are not paying you to advertise for them.
Keeping them around keeps your mind anchored to your old life and former identity. You are more than your career and retirement is about discovering who you are now outside of your career path. So clear out the corporate branding to make physical and mental space for your own personal style!
The Professional Library

All those books on leadership, management and career development can finally be taken off the bookshelf.
My favorite piece of advice: If you have a few timeless favorites that truly shaped your career, then write a heartfelt note in the front cover or highlight some passages you found especially helpful and pass them on to a recent graduate. That turns your old books into a meaningful gift, offering the next generation a roadmap to success while you finally get to read for pleasure!

As for those outdated manuals and seminar notes? They served their purpose, but that chapter has closed. You might need to check with your former employer but my guess is they most likely can head straight to the shredder.
Pro Tip: If your professional library includes highly specialized books, it can sometimes feel even harder to part with them because you know how valuable they are. If you have any of the following, the International Book Project right here in Lexington, Kentucky accepts them to help stock libraries worldwide:
Medical textbooks and academic journals (published after 2000)
Vocational books (like plumbing, carpentry, electrical, etc.)
Reference books (like dictionaries and thesauri)
The Office Awards & Trophies
The golden rule for corporate awards, plaques, and "Employee of the Month" trophies? Don’t bring them home in the first place. When you are wrapping up your final weeks at work, take a quick photo of the award to keep the memory, but leave the physical plastic and marble behind at the office.
If they’ve already made it past your front door and are sitting in a banker's box, it’s time to face facts: you do not need a dusty plaque celebrating a "Successful Software Launch" from 1995. You aren't going to hang it up and your kids do not want it passed down to them.

The Financial Paper Trail
Decades of earning a living means decades of paper trails. If your filing cabinet is bursting with pay stubs from 1988, expired health insurance policies, and quarterly statements from bank accounts you closed years ago, it’s time for a major purge.
Take this opportunity to host your own private shredding party. If you have boxes and boxes of sensitive documents to destroy, check out our blog 3-Budget-Friendly Ways to Shred Old Paperwork Safely.
Old Tech

After years in the workforce you most likely have a massive collection of old tech and I can promise you your company does not want their old pager back.
We have definitely seen closets full of old BlackBerrys, ancient laptops that weigh more than 10lbs, mystery charging cords and even the occasional old CD from AOL offering “10 Free Hours!” of dial-up internet! Your home shouldn’t look like an IT department's storage closet.
Just remember that old electronics shouldn't go into the household trash. Just google to see if your city has a specialized electronics recycling center.
If you are in Fayette County you can take them to Lexington’s Electronic Recycling Center off Versailles Road. Large chains like Best Buy and Staples also offer an easy electronics drop-off station.
Finding Peace in Your Retirement
Letting go of the tools, clothes, and clutter that defined your career can feel a little bittersweet, but it is the ultimate act of kindness to your future self. You spent decades working hard to earn your retirement, don't let the "keepsakes" of your old 9-to-5 crowd out the space you need for your next adventure. By deliberately clearing out these career items, you aren't just cleaning a closet; you are actively deciding what your new life gets to look like.
