Small humans are just that, small. So here is a super simple way to lower the hanging closet rod without a closet remodel.

Use an ADJUSTABLE hanging rod.

The one I use most often is from Simple Houseware. It does NOT require tools or an engineering degree to put together.

Width: Adjustable from 18”-30”.

Adjustable in 2-inches increments.

Hanging Height: Adjustable in 1” increments

This one takes about five minutes to put together and you can adjust its height and revisit how it functions as your child grows.

Three more ways to set it up for a school age child

  • If your child wears a uniform to school, use the bottom rack for the uniform so they have easy access to school day options in the morning.

  • Plan out the whole week's outfits on Sunday evening, putting them in order on the lower rod for your child in weekday order. Leave the majority of the clothes on the upper rack.

  • If they are working on putting away their own clothes then lower the rod to a height that is perfect for them to reach without having to stretch. Remember some clothes can get heavy!

Pro Tip: Take this opportunity to downsize the amount of clothes your child has to lessen decision fatigue!

Three additional ways to increase closet space for any closet

  • Hang shirts on the original rod. Then fold over on hangers: jeans, pants on the new additional rod

  • Put off season shirts on the original upper rod and current season shirts on the lower rod.

  • In a shared kid’s closet use this to separate out what clothes belong to which child. Put the taller child's clothes on the original rod.
